My Walmart refuses free item coupons!

Recently www.mycokerewards.com did an offer where you could cash in 30 "My Coke Rewards" points and get a coupon mailed to you for a free 12 pack of Coke products.

I did this, and then the next week they had the offer again.  I was thrilled that for only 120 points I was going to be getting four twelve packs of Coke.

Well, the first coupon arrived.  It was printed on cardstock, had the dots that if photocopied would show "VOID" across the coupon, it was printed in full color, had a serial number, AND a hologram.  Not only that I had the original mailer it came in with my name and address.

So yesterday, I was on my way to pick my mother up from the hospital and stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things as well as my 12 pack of Diet Coke.

When I got to the checkout, the cashier called a manager.  The cashier said, "This is for a free item."  The manager didn't look at the coupon and said, "We don't take those."  I was refused from using this at Walmart in Kingwood, West Virginia.

But, if you look at the Walmart coupon policy at:  http://corporate.walmart.com/coupon-policy you will see it says at the top of the page:

"We gladly accept the following types of coupons*"

Then it says below on the page:

For   free items (except those printed off the Internet)

I am doing my best to pursue this. If the manager had even looked at it, it would have been obvious it wasn't printed off the Internet. I told the cashier I was going to complain to corporate, and she asked me to please do because she's encountered other unhappy customers because they won't accept any free item coupons.  Yes, I would have been annoyed had she wanted to call Coke to verify it was legit, but it truly is legit, so it would have taken a little time, but I would have been allowed to use it.

Wal-mart is the last store in my immediate area (without driving an hour each way) that accepts free item coupons.  I know I can redeem this at gas stations and pharmacies that accept coupons, but not all gas stations and pharmacies carry everything that Wal-mart does, so I am hoping that Kingwood, WV Walmart will soon be abiding by corporate policy!

I will keep you all updated on how this progresses.

That is so frustrating. At my Walmart it really depends on the cashier. This is very ageist of me, but I avoid older lady cashiers. They seem to be toughest on the coupons. I go to younger cashiers because they seem to have an easier time accepting coupons.

I was really irritated some time ago when I had a free Gorton's coupon. I had won it on a blog. The coupon stated "ANY Gorton's item". The item pictured on the coupon was a box of fish sticks, but again, the coupon said ANY item. So when I went to purchase Gorton's tilapia, an older lady cashier looked at the coupon and flatly said no. She didn't even try to scan it. The next time I went with the coupon to a younger cashier and she scanned it with no hesitation at all and it worked. I believe the cashier should only question the coupon if it doesn't scan. Don't you think?

I totally agree. The coupon policy says they will take coupons that are NOT printed from the internet for free items as long as they scan. The manager didn't even look at my coupon, just said they wouldn't take it. The cashier said they haven't been taking any lately. Now why can a store decide they aren't going to abide by corporate policy? It doesn't matter older or younger cashier at this store, you just can't use your coupon there! In the past I have had problems with the "any" but cashiers thinking it has to be what is pictured. Do stores not employ people who can read? That's neither here nor there right now to me, though. I hope I can cause enough stink that our Walmart has to abide by corporate policy.
